This small zoo is one of the better known in Denmark, the countrys first Chimpanzee was born here and the Polar Bear enclousure is renown world wide. With its 138 species it shows a good spectrum of Soth America animals, as well as Denmarks only African Elephants. The garden opened in april 1935 and all ready the first day it had 7000 guests.

Aalborg Zoo opened its doors to the garden first guests on 13.4.1935. The possibilities of having a zoo to the city, however, were already discussed at the City Council in the winter of 1932-33. This topic ended with the limited liability company "Aalborg Zoo" and was established on the 31.08.1934 with Aalborg as the largest shareholder. The first sod was taken on the 15.11.1934, and during the winter and spring was an area of 7 acres transformed into a zoo. On the opening day it could present a large collection of birds, but also larger mammals such as red kangaroos, brown baboons, sun bears and lions. There were also many Scandinavian animals such as the fox, marten, ferret, rabbit, red deer and fallow deer in the collection. The World War had put an end to a major development and there were fewer visitors, so the zoo knew they had to get larger animals such as elephants and giraffes to reverse the bad numbers, so the first elephant house was planned 1946, but after several plans the first house for giraffes and pachyderm opened 1956. The first elephants arrived already in 1948, although they died 1951, so some new animals were first purchased after opening the house for pachyderms - they even had a calf in 1966 (The only calf so far). The African elephants you see now arrived in 1985.
After passing the entrance we turn to the right where we have a large aviary and next to it Madagascar's largest predator the fossa. The neighbors are the chimps that are so very close to man and always catching fleas. It was here first Danish ape was born. Going now to the left we encounter the African hamadryads baboons and then going up the stairs, we see the garden's oldest cage - it's from 1935 - with capuchin monkeys and green Vervet monkeys. Behind them we have a facility for the brown bear. Transient of the bistro we encounter two typical Nordic animals, the reindeer and the polar bear. Opposite, we see that the facilities for the big cats like lions, Amur tigers and the Persian leopard. Now we face the largest living land animals, the African elephant, whose opposite neighbors are suricates and African Wild Dog. In the area behind the cats, there is a facility for emus. So we have come to Denmark's only orangutans, the only real ape living in Asia. Now we come to the garden's largest enclosure, the savannah with giraffes, antelopes, ostriches and zebras. In their barn area we also find pygmy hippos and warthogs. On the right hand we see then some aviaries for the large macaws and then we find a small tropical greenhouse that is both home to reptiles as crocodiles and insects, but it is also where we find the cute marmosets. Across the road, we have the funny sea lions and Humboldt penguins. Down the stairs we have the garden exhibition building panthera and then there is an area for livestock with goats and rabbits. Across from the goats live the red panda and opposite, we have the house for kangaroos and Bactrian camels. Then we have reached the South American corner, starting with vicuñas - which probably provides the world's finest wool. And then the funny spider monkeys, using their tail as a fifth hand. They share their house with the South American tapir, great anteaters, and other animals from the pampas. Across the pampas enclosure, we find coatis, toucans and flamingos. The last house we just need to look at the end is for the colorful Rainbow Lorikeet.
